Medium Brown Hair Dye with Henna: How to Get a True Medium Brown (No Ammonia, No Peroxide)

"Medium brown hair dye" is one of the most searched hair-color terms on Amazon, and almost every result on the first page is a box of cream dye. If you have been looking for the same everyday brown without ammonia, peroxide, or synthetic pigment, this guide walks you through how our plant-based Medium Brown works, what to expect at each step, and how to keep the color looking even.

What makes a plant-based medium brown

Box dyes create brown by stripping your natural pigment and depositing a synthetic one. Henna works the other way around. Our Medium Brown mix is built on two leaves that have colored hair for centuries: henna (Lawsonia inermis), which stains the hair a warm red-orange, and indigo (Indigofera tinctoria), which adds a cool blue-black tone. Blended in the right proportion, those two tones meet in the middle and read as a natural, medium brown on most hair.

Because the color sits on and just inside the outer layer of the hair instead of replacing your own pigment, the result always keeps some of your base tone. On black or dark brown hair, Medium Brown adds warmth and softness. On light brown or gray hair, it gives you a fuller, richer brown. That is why two people using the same packet can get slightly different browns, and why the shade looks so natural.

Before you start

Begin with clean, product-free hair. Wash with a gentle shampoo, skip the conditioner, and towel-dry. Silicones and leave-in products can block the dye from reaching the hair, so a clean start matters more than with a box dye. Wear gloves, put an old towel over your shoulders, and lay something down to protect the counter. Henna stains skin and surfaces for a few days.

If your hair has been chemically dyed, bleached, or relaxed in the last few weeks, do a strand test first. Take a small section from the back, apply the paste for the full time, rinse, and wait a day before judging the color. It costs you an extra day and saves you a surprise.

Mixing the Medium Brown paste

Add the powder to a non-metal bowl and stir in warm water a little at a time until the paste is like thick yogurt. It should hold onto the spoon without dripping. You can see the texture we aim for in our Medium Brown Short: smooth, glossy, and easy to spread. Let the paste rest for 15 to 20 minutes. The henna in the mix needs that time to release its dye; the indigo does not, so don't wait longer than 30 minutes or the indigo starts to lose strength.

Applying it

Work in sections, starting at the roots and at the back of the head. Use enough paste to coat every strand generously. Thin coverage is the number one reason people get patchy browns, so be generous. Once everything is covered, pile the hair up, wrap it in plastic wrap or a shower cap, and keep it warm. Warmth helps the color develop evenly.

Leave the paste on for 60 to 90 minutes. Around 60 minutes gives a lighter, warmer brown; 90 minutes pulls the shade deeper and cooler. If you want to see the timing for every stage, our step-by-step timing guide covers it in detail.

Rinsing and the 48-hour rule

Rinse with plain water until it runs clear. Do not shampoo yet. Indigo continues to oxidize for about 48 hours, and during that window the color shifts from a slightly greenish cast to its final brown. This is completely normal; you can see it in the "apply" section of our video, where the fresh paste looks green. Wait two days before your first wash, then shampoo as usual.

What to expect on gray hair

Medium Brown covers gray well when the paste is applied thickly and left for the full time. On stubborn, resistant grays, the first application can look a shade lighter, and a second application a week later evens it out. If you want maximum gray coverage, our two-step method, pure henna first and then indigo, is the most reliable route, and we have a full guide on how long henna lasts on gray hair.

Keeping the color even

Plant-based color fades gently rather than growing out with a hard line. Most people refresh their roots every 4 to 6 weeks and do a full application every two to three months. Sulfate-free shampoo, cooler water, and skipping heat when you can all help the brown last longer. Because there is no ammonia or peroxide, you can reapply whenever you like without worrying about damage building up.

Medium Brown vs. our other browns

Not sure which brown is yours? Medium Brown is the everyday, neutral middle of our range. Brown and Rich Dark Brown lean deeper and cooler; Chestnut and Light Brown lean warmer and lighter. If you already have very dark hair and want a visible change, Chestnut may show more. If you are covering gray on dark hair, Medium Brown or Rich Dark Brown will blend most naturally.

Every shade in our 12-shade Natural Henna Hair Dye Kit is 100% plant-based, and we are a small business based in Orlando, Florida. If you have questions about your hair type, send us a photo and we'll help you choose.
